Week 3

Nathaniel about to interview a witness of the Stone Age visitors
.
Elizabeth and her crew ready for live transmission.
Homework  24/09/14
Given out on Thursday, due in on Tuesday.
English
We have been looking at the Lascaux Cave piantings as a part of our theme. To go with our cave paintings I would like you to research the Lascaux Cave paintings and write in your own words a short paragraph of information that will be attached to your painting for our museum exhibits. It doesn’t need to be a long paragraph but it must be in your own words.

Maths
Well done for completing the online homework. We are trying to sort out the glitches for those of you who could not access theirs. This week you have a geometry challenge to complete as we have been studying the properties of quadrilaterals.
Some of you may be ready to take the times tables milestones challenge. If you are confident enough, talk to myself or Mr Wainwright. Will yours be one of the first names on the milestones wall?

Please work on the 6x table this week. Keep practicing your 3x table and build up your knowledge. Remember to use your times tables tool box.

Our theme work has continued to be cross curricular, studying different types of rock and their properties in science, Stone Age cave paintings for art and Stig of the Dump as our narrative study just to list a few of our lessons. You all worked incredibly hard on your news report interview for Look East, your filming and broadcasts were extremely professional! Well done.

   Homework  18/09/14
Given out on Thursday, due in on Tuesday.

English
We have been focusing on journalistic writing this week. To create a report we have been making notes and then turning them into full sentences and paragraphs. Use your note making skills to create a personality profile on a celebrity in the news. Use the news reports on Espresso, Newsround or magazines and newspapers that you may have at home.
Maths

You have been allocated Abacus homework online this week. Go to our Class blog and click on the Abacus maths link. Alternatively you can log on to www.activelearnprimary.co.uk/login

Username: firstname and first 2 initials of surname eg: elsiewa

Password: changeme

School code: fasc

Then click on ‘my stuff’ (you must at this stage allow pop ups in Chrome)

Do the task or tasks – have fun.

Please work on the 4x table this week. Keep practicing your 3x table and build up your knowledge. Remember to use your times tables tool box.

   Homework  11/09/14
Given out on Thursday, due in on Tuesday.

English
Use your journalistic skills to write a short piece as if you are the Headteacher of our school and having to explain to the parents what happened in school on Monday afternoon in the weekly newsletter. How will you write it so that it sounds believable? Will the parents fully understand that you are not playing a joke on them? A tricky piece to write as it will sound far-fetched. Remember to use WW (wonderful words as you are writing as an adult).

Maths
Complete the multiplication, factors and square root challenges and record the time that it took you to do so. Were you faster than expected? Did you surprise yourself?

Tables need to be known by the end of Year 4 in The New Curriculum as of this week so we are conscious as a class that many of us need to catch up and work at this. Start with the 3x table this week as we have learnt it together at speed. Can you come back down as fast as you can go up? We will continue to practice them at speed, up and down, plus equivalence knowledge so that you remember them forever, not just until you leave school one day.

Welcome to Class 5

Welcome to Class 5 and the Autumn Term! I hope that you all had a thoroughly enjoyable holiday.
We have an exciting term ahead. Mrs Martin will be with us throughout the week and Mrs Dixon will teach you on Fridays. Our topic until Christmas is conflict throughout the ages, starting eleven thousand years ago with the Stone Age, moving through to the Bronze Age, the Roman period and Colchester’s important role in that part of our history. Our school trip this term is to the newly opened Colchester Castle where we will be bringing history alive in an exciting day of activities, challenges and fun. Continuing with our local history we will learn about the First World War and its impact on Fordham followed by studying WWII.
Science this term will link closely with our topic involving cross curricular skills such as maths and English. P.E will be on Mondays and Thursdays. We are fortunate to have a professional local squash instructor to teach us squash on Mondays this half term. Please ensure kits are in school all week, especially on a Monday as you won’t want to miss your lesson! We have an exciting opportunity to work with The Roman Festival this month during our music lessons, learning about The Soldier’s Tale by Stravinsky.
Homework will be given out on Thursdays and due in on Tuesdays but can be handed in earlier if completed! It will be in one exercise book and pride in presentation is essential. We will be studying spellings and Year 6 phonics techniques for life in class, so there will be no weekly spellings to learn this year.
Our Class 5 blog needs to read weekly as this will contain homework instructions which may involve online study as well as class news and photos.
Year 6 is a challenging yet exciting year and I’m looking forward to the fun and enjoyment we will have whilst developing and learning to prepare for Year 7!

Best regards

Mrs Bowles
