2017 begins!

Welcome back to another term in Class 5 - and this term we will be focusing our studies on the continent Africa.

In English we have started our unit on 'Non-Chronological Reports' in the hope that we can research and write about our favourite African animal in the next few weeks. At the moment we are developing our various writing skills to help improve our vocabulary, grammar and punctuation.

First, we had a lesson where we researched high-level vocabulary that we could use instead of over-relying on the word 'very'. We wrote eight better ideas on vocabulary spiders, which now reside in webs in the corner of our classroom!

We also practised our proof-reading skills this week, which will hopefully result in us making less silly errors in our writing overall (full stops and capital letters immediately spring to mind!). We had a giggle identifying the spelling, grammar and punctuation errors that have been made by adults in the real world!

In maths, we have been working on improving and securing our understanding of written multiplication - with plenty of practice! Next week, written division!

We have also been trialling 'Mathletics' this week, an online site that gives us amazing games, videos, activities and quizzes to help us with our maths learning. Class 5 have all enjoyed this, and some of us have even been on it so much we have already earned ourselves a bronze certificate!

We have also started our Africa topic this week. On Monday, whilst some of us experienced their first swimming session, the rest of us are having an opportunity to learn some African playground games. We started with 'Bounceball' this week - which proved to have some very challenging levels to it although we all showed some excellent perseverance!

We have also been finding out more about the geography of Africa, and used maps and factsheets to research all the countries and flags that can be found in the continent. With 53 countries to locate, we had to really focus to complete them all.

Let's hope for more brilliantly focused work next week too!
