This past week and a half has been all about getting ourselves in the Christmas spirit - which we have managed to do very very well! (Mrs Crawley has even managed to sneak in a little bit of learning at the same time!)
In English we looked at Clement C Moore's 'A Visit from St Nicholas' poem - commonly known as 'Twas the Night Before Christmas'. After creating our own reading comprehension questions about this poem, we then had a chance to innovate and write a Christmas poem of our own based on his idea.
In maths we have been completing some Christmas investigations. First we created our own icosahedrons, which we learnt was a name for a 20-sided 3D shape - and that they also made rather nifty baubles in the classroom!
We also had a look at creating multiplication stars, and seeing if we could spot patterns in our times tables.
Then we had to try and work out all 11 solutions for the different nets to make a cube - this took us a lot of perseverance!
In science, Year 6 had a chance to complete their work on electrical circuits by making a decoration with an electrical element to it. Again the equipment sometimes let us down, but overall we all managed to produce something after trying our best.
We completed our music unit on reading music with a special Christmas challenge! By reading and playing the first few bars of a piece of music - we then had to work out which Christmas carol or song the music came from! This really pushed some of the musicians in the classroom, but also a few of our non-musicians surprised themselves with how much music they can now read and begin to understand.
Finally in DT we looked further into levers and linkages, and used our knowledge to design and make our own moving parts Christmas cards. Here you can see lots of moving reindeer legs, and a few arms and legs of Father Christmas waving around too.
Of course as well as all this learning we have also been celebrating the Christmas season, with our class party on Monday, as well as Christmas jumper day on Friday 16th when we got to raise some money for charity.
And that was only in the past 8 days!
Well done on an excellent first term Class 5. Have a lovely 2 weeks off and I will see you in the New Year - when we can start looking into our new topic of Africa!
