2 for 1 offer!

Another couple of fun-filled weeks in class 5, where we have learnt about the works of Gustav Holst, written a book, taken a lot of tests and most importantly started preparing for Christmas!

In English we finally completed our unit on non-chronological reports - completing our own page about an imaginary planet for our class 5 'Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy'. Our book can now be seen displayed proudly in our classroom.
Ready for publication!

Our wonderful planet guides

Test week has given us a chance to study some of the new grammar terms that we need to know by the end of ks2. We have already started discovering determiners and the world of present progressive tense! We have also had a chance to see how our reading comprehension is, and discovered that our guided reading is really helping us with this so far!

As a class we had a chance to revise the rules of finding area and perimeter- and we even found a chance to coach each other with the facts that we know. This week we have had a chance to take part in some Christmas investigations that we have shared with the year 5/6 classes at Chappel and Eight Ash Green. Miss Vidler set us a reindeer penning challenge, then Miss Banks gave us a very tricky Santa sled problem. Finally Mrs Welsh Gave us an advent problem. This gave us a chance to work well both with our learning partners, with our class, and with other schools too!

We have also explored our music skills through our theme work too. First, we listened to the planets suite by Gustav Holst, and tried to express our feelings and ideas that the music inspired through artwork. We found there was quite a contrast between our 'Mars' image and that of 'Venus' was quite striking! We also tried to express emotion through music, by composing music to accompany a video of  rocket launch.

We had powerdown day last week, where we learnt about ecological issues. We produced some great homework and got to enjoy working with candlelight too!

As well as all of this - we have also started preparing for Christmas! Year Six did a great job of leading our whole school Christingle service, with some lovely artwork produced by our year fives. As Miss Vidler had put us through so many tests this week, and felt a bit sorry for our overworked brains, we have also made some decorations to make our classroom feel a little more festive! One of our most important decorations is our classroom advent calendar, where we and our teachers can nominate each other to receive the advent chocolate. So far our recipients have been nominated for working hard, for being good friends, and most importantly showing one of our school values!

We have more Christmas adventures to be had in the next couple of weeks, but, as always, they'll be plenty of learning along the way too!

P.S. Don't forget our new homework 'Make Class 5 feel more festive' is due on Friday 11th December!
