It has been an interesting week for us in class five. We returned from a week of passion projects and super swings and got straight back on with our theme work on Ancient Greece!
In English were introduced to some of Alan Peat's sentence types, and how we could use them to improve our writing. We were set a slow writing challenge to describe a scene from a Greek myth - and impressed ourselves with how sophisticated our writing could be! At the end of the week we planned and wrote our own Greek myth, using all that we have learnt in our studies for the past two weeks. With our myth writing we managed to explain everything from why we have tides to why we have rainbows.
During maths we looked over the rules of rounding. We also have had a chance to practise our written methods for addition and subtraction, looking into all the frequent errors we can make and how we can remember to not make them! We started on filming a 'How to' guide for written addition and subtraction - watch this space for their future publication!
With theme this week we learnt about the geography and culture of Greece. First we looked into Greece as a country and wrote a postcard describing the climate, terrain, buildings and food. We then got to work with our learning partners on creating our own sets of 'Greek God Top Trumps' based on the research we were able to do about the major and minor Greek Gods.
In Science we were able to use experiments to help us understand more about how the world works. Year 5 used balloon rockets and different materials of string to test friction, and Year 6 designed their own experiments to prove how shadows change size depending on the distance between the object and the light source.
It's been a tiring week for us, and a lot of us are still recovering from our previous week! Hopefully we can have a restful weekend in preparation for another full week ahead of us!
Also a reminder that our first home learning task has been set. I look forward to seeing all our creative contributions in 2 weeks time!

Welcome Class 5 2015/2016!
I can't believe we have only been back at school a week - we have fitted in so much so far!
In English we have started looking at Greek myths in detail, picking up on the key themes to help us when we write our own. We are already enjoying finding out about what the Greek Gods got up to, the amazing creatures and monsters and actions of our Greek heroes!
Completing our Greek Myth analysis sheets
We have been warming up our maths skills with some place value work this week. We had a lot of fun learning about multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 by getting numbers to 'move their place' on seats! As well as looking at some card games at the beginning of the week, we enjoyed a rounding game at the end of it - all you need are a pack of cards, some dice and some paper and you can play them again at home!
Using chairs and children as a real life place value board
It seemed logical to start our theme of Ancient Greece by making sure we knew where and when the Ancient Greeks were. Some of us found our map-reading skills a little rusty when we had to locate Ancient Greek cities on a blank sheet, but with perseverance we got there in the end! We are becoming more confident in choosing our level and designing our own way of presenting our work too.
Year 6 designing an experiment to prove light travels in straight lines
