We have quite a bit to look forward to this week. We will continue perfecting the watercolour technique of Kiwi artist Ron Reid with New Zealand landscapes.  Class 5 will compare Fordham census data with the village that we will be studying in New Zealand, Horotiu which is of a comparable size.  We will enjoy learning The Haka and trying to perfect it along with writing to possible pen pals in Horotiu too.

   Homework  19/01/15
Due in on Friday as homework will be given out on Mondays.
English
Homework this week is research how volcanoes and earthquakes occur and how they affect New Zealand. What happened in Christchurch, New Zealand? Why do earthquakes happen?  Produce a fact sheet and diagrams so that someone who has never heard of volcanoes or earthquakes can understand.
I am still expecting a book review each week on the blog when you have finished a Bug Club book. L6 books may take a fortnight to complete.
Maths
You will be given challenges involving averages after studying how to solve these last week. Thinking Things Through!
Well done with your sports personality from New Zealand – there are some really smashing pieces of research with excellent presentation and imagination.

What is the mean and mode for Pombear crispsin a multipack?

Mean, mode, median and range - a delicious challenge this week!

  1. Dogs of hinterland book review
At the moment i'm reading dogs of hinterland it is full of suspense and I am really enjoying it however, sometimes I think the author gets carried away in his writing and it becomes boring but it is a good book so I'm going to rate it 6 out of 10

  5. Run

I really like this book so far as it's one that you cannot put down so easily! It is about a family living in 1911 just before the war started so I'm excited to read about what happens in three years time! The names are all very
old-fashioned and the author has not made it too modern, but easy to understand. I am really fond of this book as I like stories that are set in historical time, but even if someone didn't, I'd still recommend it!

    5 out of 5 stars / 10 out of 10!

  6. The Dogs of the Hinterland

I have already commented on this book but after reading more into it I have changed my mind. I agree with Zoe, and think that the author got carried away and that it has become boring. It doesn't really make you want to read on, and it's such a shame because at the start I really liked it.

    4 out of 10

  7. book review on Ampta the river at the other side of the world.
I think this book is really interesting how the king wants people to go on a journey to the other side of the world to save his son. Ampta's brothers go on a journey to find the river at the edge of the world but they take back the wrong water. They are punished for this and put in prison. I think the king was harsh, but he was desperate. It all turned out good at the end, I rate this book 5/10.

  21. Listen to the Moon
I recently read "Listen to the Moon" by Michael Morpurgo. I enjoyed this book and like the fact that the story is told from two points of view, which made it easier to follow. I also liked that it was based on a real story; which helped me to empathise with the characters and become absorbed in the plot.

Written by Zoe Sugg, "Girl Online" is about a girl called Penny Porter using the alias "Girl Online" for her blog. I think this is an accessible story which is well-written, getting to the point quickly without being too abrupt. The characters created brought the story to life and I couldn't put it down!

  37. "How to persuade an angry goddess" is the book I have reading. A play script with the success criteria,a great book about Romans slaves. 3 out of 5 is my rating as the story wasn't very realistic e.g "oh of goodness sake" - I don't think they would say that in Roman times!!
